Finding Rentals and Starting an Application
Browse public listings on VerticalRent, or pick up an application a landlord invited you to — both paths land in the same place: your renter dashboard.
Browsing public listings
My Listings inside your renter dashboard is the same search used on VerticalRent's public listings page — you just get it inside your signed-in shell. Use the filter bar to narrow results:
- City or ZIP code — free-text search
- State— pick any U.S. state, or leave it as "Any State"
- Min rent and Max rent — set a monthly budget range
- Bedrooms — Studio, 1, 2, 3, or 4+ bedrooms
- Pets OK toggle — shows only listings whose pet policy allows cats, small or any dogs, all pets, or is negotiable
Search updates the page URL, so you can bookmark or share a specific filtered search. Each result card shows a cover photo, address, bedroom/bathroom count, square footage (when known), monthly rent, and the date it becomes available, plus a pets OK badge when it qualifies. From a card you can View Details for the full listing or jump straight to Apply Now.
Applying directly from a listing
Clicking Apply Now on a listing opens that unit's application form. If you're not signed in yet, you'll be sent to sign up with the renter role pre-selected — you're returned straight to the application afterward. If you're already signed in as a landlord or vendor, VerticalRent sends you back to the public listing instead, since applications are renter-only.
On this path, you fill out the application, upload any documents you want, and pay the landlord's application fee if one applies (some landlords charge $0). The landlord then reviews your application and orders any background screening reports afterward — you'll see the request appear on your application once they do.
Starting from an emailed invite link
If a landlord invited you directly to apply for one of their units, you'll get a secure /apply/[token]link by email or text instead of finding the listing yourself. This invite path is more detailed than a self-serve listing application: the landlord can pre-request specific screening reports (criminal background, eviction history, rental history/address verification, and income & bank verification) as part of the invite, and those requirements — along with who pays for them — are baked into the application before you ever see it.
