Paying Rent, Setting Up Autopay, and Viewing Receipts
Pay rent online once your lease is active, set up autopay so you never miss a due date, and keep a receipt or statement for every charge.
Making a one-time payment
Once your lease is active, any balance due appears at the top of your Payments page — the amount, due date, and an "LATE" flag if it's overdue. Clicking Pay Now lets you choose a payment method before you're charged:
- Bank Transfer (Stripe Link / ACH) — "Most Popular"; a flat $3.00 processing fee at cost; takes 2–4 business days to settle.
- Credit / Debit Card— instant confirmation; Stripe's exact card rate of 2.9% + $0.30 added on top of rent.
Before you confirm, you'll see the full breakdown — monthly rent, processing fee, and total charge — and your card details are never stored by VerticalRent, only by Stripe.
Setting up autopay
From the Payments page, enable autopay on a lease to have rent charged automatically every month on the 1st, with automatic retries if a charge fails. Choose your method when enrolling:
- Bank (ACH) — includes a $3 processing fee per payment.
- Card— includes Stripe's card processing fee (2.9% + $0.30); if you already have a saved card on file, you can enroll with it in one click instead of re-entering payment details.
Before you enroll, a quote preview shows your monthly rent, the recurring autopay charge, and — if you're enrolling mid-period — a prorated "due today" amount plus the date your first full charge starts.
Autopay isn't available until your landlord connects payouts
If an autopay charge fails
Autopay flips to a "Rent Autopay — Action Needed" state, the missed charge is marked late with a late fee applied per your lease terms (by default $50 after a 5-day grace period, unless your landlord set different terms), and you're prompted to update your payment method or pay manually. Autopay returns to active automatically once a payment succeeds again. You can cancel autopay at any time from the same card — you'll then need to pay manually each month.
Reminders and late fees
VerticalRent emails you a reminder 3 days before rent is due and again on the due date(autopay tenants don't get these unless a payment is late). If rent isn't paid within your lease's grace period, it's marked late, a late-fee notice is emailed, and the late fee is added to your balance and reflected on your statement.
Viewing payment history and receipts
Every rent charge — paid or still due — is listed on your Payments page and dashboard, with a status pill (Due, Paid, Late, Failed, Refunded). Click any entry to open:
- A receipt (once paid) showing the property, landlord, period, rent, any late fee, the processing fee you were actually charged, and the total — printable directly from the page.
- A statement (while still unpaid) with the same breakdown, clearly marked that it is not a paid receipt.
A copy of your receipt is also emailed automatically whenever a payment clears.
